XP Users Beware!  |
Review of 1260 perfection Photo
Firstly let me say that now the scanner is working, I am very pleased with it. Quick and easy to use and excellent scan qualitySecondly , Dont install on XP without first getting some fixes from the internet. If your XP version is up to date, (and particularly you have service pack 1) the smartpanel software will not install properly. You need a rather obscure xp update.
Details of this are on Epsonn website, though you have to dig for it. If you do try to install without doing this first, the software has to be totally removed from your system, and a simple uninstall doesnt work, you need a utility which removes some registry entries and then to delete some directories. Thirdly if your printer is not also an Epson, the copy utility and one touch button will often not work. I fixed this by getting the latest patch for Smartpanel from the writers Newsoft. This fixed the problem for my HP printer, but they dont promise it will work for all none epsom printers. If you dig on the Epson/Newsoft websites, they say the copier utility was only designed to work with Epson printers. This is poor, the write-ups and advertising dont mention it and its like saying if youve bought one of our scanners, then go buy one of our printers for it to work properly! Hence the middling mark. You shouldnt have to do all this to get a brand new product working on a modern system

If you want a good scanner at a better price this is the one for you. I really only wanted a scanner for OCR work and a few graphics, and this is up to the task, The OCR software is excellent, even on folded printed matter the results are spot on. On a light note the software kept (all the time!!) scanning and recognising "connected" as "con nected" which I thought was more amusing than it really is :-)
Other than that the Arksoft photo software has a really childish interface and isnt that good, even bog standard microsoft photo editor is better. Just my opinion. The scanner itself give crisp clear result and the software DPI increase gives good results.Incidently, I got it delivered for a lot cheaper than I could have gotten it locally. Buy 1 today.

Excellent scanner at an excellent price  |
This was my first scanner purchase and I could not have expected anything better.Everything did what it was supposed to and the quality is excellent. Installation went through straight away.
